WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CALABASH NC??

Phyllis
Tucked into the very southeast corner of North Carolina nestles a small, quaint fishing village.  It doesn't even appear on many maps, but Calabash NC has a wonderful history and is worth a visit any time of the year.  Perched on the Calabash River, about three miles from US 17 and the entrance to Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort, it is a romantic port-side town still retaining a rustic image.  However, it is only 25 miles from the sparkle and attractions of Myrtle Beach SC and one hour soth of Wilmington NC.  There is only one stop light in the whole village!  It has always been noted for its tasty and inexpensive seafood restaurants--with the catch only hours old.

There is the best Christmas Shop on the East Coast right here--at Callahan's Nautical Gifts.  Items from around the world crowd the aisles with unusual things.  Want to go fishing or crabbing--turn on River Road at the light and go down to the Calabash Docks.  Where did this unusual name come from?? Tradition has it that it was named for the "calabash" gourd raised and used by the local Indians for cups and bowls.  And that is where Calabash got its name.
